The Student Senate at Northwest Missouri State University is inviting students to consider seeking election to its 2024-25 executive board.

Interested students must attend one information session to learn more about the organization and its election process during the week of March 18. Student Senate will host the sessions at 7 p.m. Monday, March 18; 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 19; noon Wednesday, March 20; and 2 p.m. Thursday, March 21.

All sessions will occur in The Carnahan Student Senate Chamber on the third floor of the J.W. Jones Student Union, except for the Tuesday meeting, which will occur in the Student Union Ballroom in conjunction with the full Student Senate’s weekly meeting.

“Student Senate is a fantastic opportunity to meet other leaders throughout campus and also be connected as a Bearcat,” said Elizabeth Motazedi, a senior social studies-history education major from Joplin, Missouri, who is the current Student Senate president and the University’s student regent. “I highly recommend joining this organization as you will truly grow as a person and in leadership.”

Eligible candidates may begin campaigning Monday, March 25, and voting will take place Monday, April 1, through Friday, April 5. All students eligible to vote will receive an email informing them of their representatives on the ballot.

Results will be announced during the Student Senate’s April 9 meeting, and the 2024-25 executive board will be sworn in during the organization’s April 16 meeting.

Student Senate is the elected, representative governing body of the Student Government Association (SGA) at Northwest. It makes decisions for the SGA and expresses the official opinion of the Northwest student body. It consists of four representatives from each class, one representative of graduate students, five representatives for off-campus students and five representatives for on-campus students.

Any student may join the Student Senate as a non-voting associate member. Senators are expected to serve on the Student Senate and University committees to serve constituents. Student Senate also provides students with numerous opportunities to get involved on campus, stay informed about important issues, and develop long lasting relationships with other student leaders and campus administrators.
